What is Theosis? Or What Does It Mean to Be Partakers In the Divine Nature

|

You're here because you heard somebody say the word theosis, and your first thought was what is theosis? This concept has its primary scriptural expression in II Peter 1:3-4 when it talks about us being partakers of the divine nature.

“His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature.”

This often hits modern Christians like a ton of bricks. Many have never even heard of this phrase. Many ask, “What do you mean we become ‘partakers of the divine nature?’”

This perplexing and wordview-shifting doctrine is called “Theosis.” Learning about Theosis will radically change how one views God, the church, and the gospel. The good news becomes even greater news. We do not only become “saved” from our sins, much more than that, we are brought into a living union with God, partaking of the divine nature.
